Glyphs is an exploration of the elements that make written text recognizable as real language, rather than arbitrary symbols or scribbles.
I began to craft unique shapes into different Glyph "alphabets" and carve them into rubber blocks that I could individually print on to paper. I started with the Box Glyph alphabet whose theme centers around square form and right angles, reminiscent of some ancient Mayan glyphs.
Each alphabet contains individually carved mono spaced characters that have shared design features or rules that dictate their form. The goal was to tap into the viewer's innate ability to see symbols as some sort of written language, without being able to recognize or understand it.
